Saul “Canelo” Alvarez: Defending WBC Light Middleweight Title
Height- 5’9” Reach- 71 inches
Record- (40-0-1, 29 KO) From Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico
Age: 22 Years Old
Last Fight- Won against Shane Mosley (05/05/2012)
Stance: Orthodox
Fighting Style: Alvarez is an economical, powerful fighter. He works methodically and picks his power shots wisely. A good combination puncher but is flat-footed at times with good, but has-yet-to-be-challenged defense.
Josesito Lopez
Height- 5’10” Reach- 72 inches
Record- (30-4-0, 1 NC, 18 KO) From Riverside, California
Age: 28 Years Old
Last Fight- Won against Victor Ortiz (06/23/2012)
Stance: Orthodox
Fighting Style: Lopez is a slugger who usually stands in front of his opponents and wings punches. He isn’t the hardest hitting boxer in the division but as we saw when he broke Victor Ortiz’s jaw in his last fight, it’s best not to leave a chin out for him to hit repeatedly.
My Prediction: Saul Alvarez will win by Unanimous Decision and retain his title. Lopez is naturally a smaller fighter and the move up in weight isn’t going to help his punching power. Alvarez is too disciplined to get into a brawling match with Lopez and he will box and use his power to keep Lopez off of him. The event is taking place in the same city at the same time as the Martinez-Chavez, Jr. fight and that is unfortunate for fight fans and the sport in general.
